About The Position

Earthjustice is seeking summer law clerks for its Northern Rockies Program. This program focuses on litigation aimed at protecting wildlife and wild lands in the Northern Rockies region, including areas around Yellowstone and Glacier national parks. The work involves challenging destructive fossil fuel projects, enforcing pollution laws, advocating for energy policy, and addressing environmental concerns related to AI data center development. The program also supports environmental interests of Native American communities, focusing on opposing mining on culturally significant lands, restoring native wildlife, and advancing Tribal sovereignty and environmental health in the transition away from coal power. Earthjustice, founded in 1971, is a non-profit environmental law organization that uses legal action and partnerships to protect people's health, preserve natural places and wildlife, advance clean energy, and combat climate change.

Requirements

  • Must be enrolled in a U.S. law school through fall 2027 (not graduating before December 2027)
  • Must be available to commit ten weeks during summer 2027
  • Must work from the U.S. during the clerkship

  • Cover letter addressing relevant background, reasons for interest in Earthjustice's mission and litigation teams, and inspiring environmental or public interest issues
  • Legal writing sample of no more than 10 pages

Responsibilities

  • Draft pleadings and briefs
  • Conduct legal research
  • Develop strategy and legal theories
  • Gather evidence
  • Attend client meetings and court proceedings
  • Participate in programmatic offerings such as seminars on environmental issues, interactions with environmental groups, and a job interview workshop.
