About The Position

The Detroit Free Press, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, is offering paid journalism internships to college students and recent graduates at newsrooms nationwide. The summer internships are for candidates interested in any of the following career paths: reporting, producing, social media, photography, or videography. This posting is specifically for candidates interested in the Detroit Free Press location in Detroit, MI. The program is designed for college juniors, seniors, recent graduates, and graduate students. The internship duration is 10 weeks with a TBD start date and an hourly rate of $18.00. Interns will gain hands-on experience in covering various news topics, writing headlines, creating social media content, multimedia storytelling, photography, videography, and investigative journalism. They will also participate in training sessions led by veteran journalists on essential journalistic skills.

Requirements

  • Enrolled in or recently graduated from a journalism program (junior year or beyond preferred)
  • Strong writing, research, and fact-checking skills
  • Familiarity with AP style
  • Facility with AI and automation and experience in using it to enhance journalism
  • Critical thinking, adaptability, and attention to detail
  • A valid driver’s license
  • Reliable transportation
  • Minimum liability insurance required by state law
  • Availability for some evening and weekend work

Responsibilities

  • Write 4–5 stories per week, including breaking news, features, and event coverage
  • Conduct interviews (in person, by phone, or virtually)
  • Research and gather information from various sources
  • Produce multimedia content to support stories
  • Collaborate in brainstorming sessions
