Summer Intern - Engineering

Kunin Technologies•Chattanooga, TN
•Onsite

About The Position

Kunin Technologies is hiring an engineering intern for approximately 12 weeks in summer 2027, based in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The intern will join the engineering team, which designs, builds, and commissions metal recovery plants using the company’s proprietary ion-exchange media. The team works across process design, mechanical design of skids and vessels, and electrical, instrumentation, and control systems for bench rigs and mini-pilots. The intern will work on one of three tracks matched to their background: electrical and instrumentation or controls, including instrument selection, loop drawings, and PLC/HMI configuration; mechanical engineering, including skid layout, vessel and piping design, and equipment specification; or chemical process engineering, including mass and energy balances, process flow diagrams, equipment sizing, and pilot data analysis. By the end of the summer, the intern is expected to deliver a completed, documented design package or commissioned subsystem that can be used in the next plant build. Strong performers may be considered for a full-time position after graduation.

Requirements

  • Be an undergraduate or graduate student in electrical, mechanical, or chemical engineering, or a closely related field, graduating in 2027 or 2028.
  • Have skills in relevant tools for the selected track: PLC and HMI programming and electrical schematics; SolidWorks or similar CAD and FEA; or Aspen, process simulation, and Excel-based balances.
  • Be comfortable working hands-on in a lab and pilot environment, including wiring instruments, assembling piping, or running equipment.
  • Be able to work in a fast-paced and demanding atmosphere.
  • Be a self-driven contributor who documents work carefully and asks for help early.

Nice To Haves

  • Exposure to hydrometallurgy, chemical plants, or industrial automation.

Responsibilities

  • Own a defined engineering deliverable on the selected track, such as a control loop set, skid design package, or process design basis.
  • Produce and maintain engineering documents, including P&IDs, instrument lists, 3D models and drawings, equipment data sheets, and calculations.
  • Support commissioning and operation of bench rigs and mini-pilots, including instrument calibration and data acquisition.
  • Analyze pilot data and feed results back into the design.
  • Work with vendors on equipment and instrument quotes and specifications.
