About The Position

All Hinds Community College employees must commit to the Caring Campus approach to student engagement and daily apply these general behavioral objectives: listen to student questions and concerns with a positive attitude and make meaningful connections with students. The Upward Bound Math & Science (UBMS) Summer Instructor/Residential Assistant (RA) is a dual-role position responsible for supporting both the academic and residential components of the six-week summer program. The position provides STEM instruction during the academic day while also supervising, mentoring, and supporting students in the residential setting. The RA helps create a structured, safe, and supportive environment that promotes academic achievement, personal growth, and college readiness. The position also serves as a learning advocate/resource broker through the “Check and Connect” Mentoring Program.

Requirements

  • Strong commitment to working with disadvantaged and underrepresented student populations
  • Ability to support high school students in academic and residential environments
  • Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to enforce rules and maintain structure in a residential setting
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and reside on campus during the program
  • Ability to provide academic support and tutoring in every subject area
  • College student with at least 30 semester hours completed
  • Minimum grade point average of 3.0 or above

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with youth or in educational settings preferred
  • Experience in tutoring, mentoring, or residential life support is highly desirable
  • TRIO Alumni preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain knowledge of diversity-related issues, legislation, and best practices.
  • Will be responsible for participants in the residential halls.
  • Will provide daily meetings with residential group at the beginning of the day to set goals/objectives for the day and at the end of the day to assess the goals/objectives of the day.
  • Will assist academic instructors during class sessions.
  • Will provide intervention/tutoring to struggling participants.
  • Will serve as a learning advocate/resource broker for students through the “Check and Connect” Mentoring Program.
  • Will supervise and support students during evening and weekend residential activities.
  • Will assist with planning and implementing structured enrichment and recreational activities.
  • Will monitor student behavior and ensure compliance with program rules, policies, and expectations.
  • Will respond appropriately to student needs, concerns, and emergencies.
  • Will maintain accurate documentation as required by program guidelines.
  • All other duties as assigned.
  • Will supervise participants during their residential stay and during summer activities.
  • Responsible for ensuring student safety, accountability, and appropriate behavior in residential and program settings.
  • Will provide guidance and support to assigned student groups under the direction of program staff.
