About The Position

The Upward Bound Math & Science (UBMS) Summer Instructor at Hinds Community College is responsible for delivering engaging, rigorous instruction in STEM-related subjects during a six-week summer component. This role involves supporting program participants in developing academic skills, critical thinking, and college readiness, while fostering a supportive and inclusive learning environment. In addition to instructional duties, the instructor will serve as a learning advocate and resource broker through the “Check and Connect” Mentoring Program, connecting students to academic and support resources. All employees are expected to commit to the Caring Campus approach to student engagement.

Requirements

  • Ability to teach and engage high school students in a classroom or enrichment setting
  • Strong commitment to working with disadvantaged and underrepresented student populations
  • Ability to incorporate innovative, hands-on, and experiential learning strategies
  • Excellent communication, organization, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with program staff and stakeholders
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant subject area
  • State of Mississippi teaching certification in the subject area

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience working with disadvantaged students is highly desirable
  • Experience teaching STEM-related subjects at the secondary or postsecondary level is preferred

Responsibilities

  • Maintain knowledge of diversity-related issues, legislation, and best practices.
  • Plan and deliver high-quality, standards-based instruction aligned with UBMS program goals
  • Develop and implement engaging, hands-on curriculum for assigned subject area.
  • Foster a positive and inclusive classroom environment that supports student growth and achievement
  • Monitor and assess student progress, providing timely feedback and academic support
  • Maintain accurate records of attendance, grades, and student performance
  • Collaborate with program staff to ensure alignment with overall program objectives
  • Participate in staff meetings, training sessions, and program activities as required
  • Serve as a learning advocate/resource broker for students through the “Check and Connect” Mentoring Program, connecting participants to academic and support resources
  • Encourage student participation in academic, cultural, and enrichment activities
  • Uphold program policies, procedures, and federal TRIO/UBMS guidelines
  • Other duties as assigned.
