The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) seeks current high school juniors and seniors for its Summer High School Internship Program (SHIP), an in-person student volunteer program at the NIST campus in Boulder, Colorado. Students work under the guidance of a research mentor in a participating laboratory, gaining exposure to cutting-edge research and exploring careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Participating Boulder laboratories include the Communications Technology Laboratory, Information Technology Laboratory, Material Measurement Laboratory, and Physical Measurement Laboratory. Applicants must select a first-choice host laboratory, which will primarily consider their application. Research areas span a broad range of STEM disciplines, including biochemistry, biology, biophysics, chemistry, computer science, engineering, materials science, mathematics, nanoscale science, neutron research, physics, and statistics. Students work with a mentor on a designated research project, submit an abstract halfway through the program, create and present a poster during the final week, and attend a closing celebration on the last day. Participants are also strongly encouraged to attend a technical seminar series and take part in professional development and other group activities. All students must work in person at the Boulder campus for the entire appointment. The program is unpaid and confers no employment status or benefits; students must provide their own housing and transportation.
