About The Position

Association for New Canadians is a non-profit, community-based organization dedicated to the provision of settlement and integration services for immigrants and refugees. The Summer Enrichment Program (SEP) Mathematics Instructor is responsible for designing and delivering engaging educational programming that supports the academic success and social integration of refugee and immigrant youth. The instructor will develop materials prior to program start and deliver high-quality instruction throughout the program. Working within a culturally diverse environment, the instructor will foster a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning space that encourages participant engagement, confidence, and academic growth.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Education or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience teaching mathematics
  • Experience working with newcomer, immigrant, refugee, or multilingual youth
  • Strong understanding of language acquisition principles
  • Excellent communication, organizational and classroom management skills
  • Legal authorization to work in Canada
  • Flexible to work outside of core hours (Monday-Friday, 9:00am - 5:00pm)
  • Valid class 5 NL driver’s license and daily access to a personal vehicle is required
  • Position is subject to a satisfactory Criminal Record Screening and Vulnerable Sector Check from the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary

Responsibilities

  • Develop age-appropriate and engaging lesson plans and learning materials two-weeks prior to program commencement
  • Adapt instructional materials to meet the learning needs of participants
  • Incorporate interactive, student-centered teaching strategies
  • Ensure curriculum aligns with program objectives and participant learning outcomes
  • Deliver mathematics instruction appropriate to participant age, academic level, and learning needs
  • Support participants in strengthening foundational mathematics skills and problem-solving abilities
  • Use practical and engaging approaches to make mathematics accessible and relevant
  • Facilitate individual and group learning activities
  • Monitor and assess participant progress and provide ongoing feedback and support
  • Track attendance records and monitor participant engagement
  • Promote active participation and positive classroom environment
  • Create a welcoming and inclusive learning environment for newcomer, refugee and immigrant youth
  • Support participants' academic, social, and emotional well-being
  • Foster cross-cultural understanding and respect
  • Identify and communicate any participant concerns to the Program Coordinator as appropriate
  • Participate in staff orientation, planning meetings, and training sessions
  • Contribute to program evaluation and reporting
  • Maintain confidentiality of participant information
  • Adhere to ANC policies, procedures, and safeguarding practices
  • Assist with other Summer program activities as required
