About The Position

The After-School Program Coordinator is responsible for overseeing and managing the day-to-day operations of an elementary-aged after-school program. The role involves planning and executing fun, engaging, and educational activities for children in kindergarten through fifth grade. The Coordinator ensures that the program runs smoothly, is safe, and meets the developmental needs of all participants. This position involves leadership, communication, and collaboration with parents, teachers, and community partners. Summer hours are 9:00am-5:30pm.

Requirements

  • Previous experience working with children, especially in an educational or recreational setting.
  • Strong organizational and leadership skills, ability to multitask, excellent communication skills, and the ability to build positive relationships with children, parents, and staff.
  • CPR and First Aid certification (preferred or willing to obtain).
  • Background check required.
  • Patience, creativity, and the ability to engage children in fun and educational activities.
  • A passion for working with kids and fostering a positive, inclusive environment.
  • Desire to take an active role in planning and implementing programming for Elementary School-aged children.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Child Development, Recreation, or a related field.
  • Experience in program management or staff supervision is highly desirable.
  • CPR and First Aid certification (preferred or willing to obtain).
  • Knowledgeable of South Dakota state childcare licensing policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and organize daily activities that foster learning, creativity, physical activity, and social skills. These activities may include arts and crafts, sports, academic support, games, and field trips.
  • Ensure a safe and welcoming environment for all children in the program. Supervise staff and volunteers, and monitor children to ensure their well-being and adherence to program rules.
  • Hire, train, and manage after-school program staff, ensuring they are knowledgeable about program goals and safety protocols. Provide ongoing support and performance feedback.
  • Maintain open and effective communication with parents and guardians regarding children’s progress, behavior, and any concerns. Provide regular updates about upcoming activities and events.
  • Manage attendance, record keeping, and other administrative duties such as keeping track of supplies and equipment. Ensure compliance with state licensing and school policies.
  • Implement behavior management strategies to maintain a positive and respectful environment. Address any behavioral issues in a proactive and constructive manner.
  • Work closely with school teachers and staff to align after-school activities with school curricula and identify children who may benefit from additional support.
  • Assist with managing program budgets, including ordering supplies, ensuring cost-effective use of resources, and tracking expenditures.
  • Stay up to date and knowledgeable of all state licensing procedures and policies.
