About The Position

Ethical Culture Fieldston School is seeking a passionate and experienced summer Swim Instructor for their six-week summer day camp. This role is responsible for teaching water safety and swimming techniques to students from PreK through 8th grade at various skill levels. Duties include creating lesson plans, assessing student progress, maintaining a safe and supervised environment, and communicating with parents or participants about skill development. The position is full-time, running from June 22, 2026, through July 31, 2026, Monday - Friday from 8:30 am-3:30 pm. Mandatory training dates are May 31st, June 13th, and June 14th. The hiring range is $20.00 - $25.00 per hour. This is an onsite role.

Requirements

  • Advanced CPR/First Aid Certifications and previous lifeguarding experience
  • A Bachelor’s Degree or some college level coursework required
  • The ability to identify issues quickly and problem solve accordingly, and to remain calm in stressful situations that may arise
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • The ability to follow directions and apply feedback in a dynamic and fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrated responsibility, reliability, and maturity appropriate for working with children
  • The ability to engage with campers across a wide developmental range (Pre-K through 8th grade)
  • Patience and adaptability when working with different age groups and learning needs
  • The ability to remain engaged, attentive, and professional throughout the camp day
  • A positive attitude and willingness to learn and take initiative
  • Reliability, punctuality, and consistent attendance
  • The ability to contribute to a welcoming and inclusive camp environment in which all members of our community feel supported and valued
  • A passion for teaching with a pleasant and positive demeanor toward all forms of teaching and learning
  • The ability to collaborate and build strong relationships with faculty, administrators, students, parents, and the overall community

Responsibilities

  • Working in tandem with the Director of Aquatics to plan and lead age-appropriate swimming sessions for Pre-K to 8 grade students
  • Ensuring the safety and well-being of all participants by closely monitoring swimming activities and enforcing pool rules
  • Creating a positive, inclusive, and supportive learning environment for all participants
  • Appropriately addressing student behavioral issues and other challenges that may arise in order to maintain a safe environment and a sense of calm in such situations
  • Providing encouragement to students to help support their social and emotional growth
  • Ensuring the confidentiality of student information as necessary
  • Attending meetings as scheduled
  • Learning and implementing after school policies and procedures
  • Maintaining accurate attendance records and reporting any incidents to the program coordinator
  • Assisting in monitoring Pre-K to 5th-grade students during afterschool check-in
  • Escorting children between Fieldston Lower and the Athletics Center pool
  • Fostering positive relationships with team members and various stakeholders
  • Maintaining compliance with all school policies, state regulations, and educational standards
  • Performing other related projects and duties as needed and assigned
