About The Position

Iḷisaġvik College is rooted in the ancestral homeland of the Iñupiat. The Summer Camp Chaperone assists in chaperoning students travelling to and from Ilisagvik College Summer Camps in Utqiaġvik, from Anchorage, Bethel, Kotzebue, Fairbanks and/or other locations within the state of Alaska as assigned, with the participants’ safety as the highest priority.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated practical experience working with youth.
  • Strong oral and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact effectively in a multicultural environment, including working with groups of diverse ages and backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to work a flexible work schedule and travel periodically.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment background check.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in one or more of the following areas: post-secondary educational systems, North Slope Borough [NSB] institutions and organizations; Iñupiat culture, language, values, and traditions.
  • Ability to interpret and represent North Slope community values, customs, and beliefs for the College.
  • Ability to interpret and represent College actions and western institutions to the North Slope community.
  • Ability to support Iḷisaġvik College’s mission.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid driver’s license and the ability to present a clean driving record prior to employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate’s degree or equivalent, or above.
  • CPR/First Aid certification or ability to obtain one upon employment.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in coordinating and providing meals, ground transportation (including taxis), and lodging accommodations when necessary for traveling students.
  • Collect, organize, and submit all travel-related receipts and documentation to the designated College representative (Recruitment Manager) in a timely manner
  • Provide support for additional camp chaperone coverage as needed, based on program demands
  • Provide daily support to students by answering questions, assisting with basic problem-solving, and serving as a positive mentor and role model.
  • Maintain clear and consistent communication with Student Services staff regarding travel updates, issues, or emergencies, and regularly communicate with campers, their guardians, and Student Services staff about student behavior, participation, and any concerns that arise.
  • Document and report incidents using College Incident Report forms and immediately notify Student Services staff of any unusual or critical situations.
  • Maintain professionalism at all times, including refraining from personal phone use during assigned shifts unless related to camp duties or emergencies.
  • Reside with traveling students for the duration of shift to ensure availability and responsiveness to student needs.
  • Attend staff meetings and/or training sessions to encourage teamwork, strengthen and promote communication, and enhance professional growth.
  • Complies with College policies, procedures and administrative directives, as well as state, federal, and local laws, regulations, and ordinances.
  • Performs other duties as assigned and/or needed.
