About The Position

The SUE Project Coordinator I supports the planning and execution of Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) projects, coordinating field operations and ensuring accurate detection, documentation, and mapping of underground utilities. This entry-to-mid-level role works under the direction of a SUE Project Manager or SUE Lead and contributes to quality, safety, and schedule compliance across assigned task orders.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in utility locating, subsurface utility engineering, or a related field
  • Familiarity with 811 one-call systems and utility locate protocols
  • Working knowledge of geophysical detection equipment, including GPR and electromagnetic locators
  • Ability to read and interpret utility plans, as-built records, and GIS data
  • Strong organizational and communication skills with the ability to coordinate among multiple stakeholders
  • Proficiency in or willingness to learn GIS platforms (e.g., ArcGIS Pro) and field data collection tools
  • Commitment to safety protocols and quality standards in field operations

Nice To Haves

  • NULCA Certification in EM & Ground Penetrating Radar
  • Familiarity with CI/ASCE 38-02 Quality Level standards
  • Existing relationships with utility owners, DOT agencies, municipalities, or contractors that could support future client development

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate day-to-day field activities for SUE projects, including scheduling crews, mobilizing equipment, and supporting timely project delivery
  • Perform and support Quality Level A and B (QL-A and QL-B) utility investigations using geophysical detection technologies, including electromagnetic designation and ground-penetrating radar (GPR)
  • Identify, locate, and map underground utilities in accordance with CI/ASCE 38-02 standards
  • Oversee and support SUE technicians in identifying marked utilities, structures, and control points on plans, maps, and in the field
  • Supervise operator-level maintenance on assigned company tools and equipment
  • Maintain accurate recording of data for marked utilities, structures, and control points in the field
  • Support the operation of vacuum trucks and related tools and equipment, including jackhammers, pogo-tampers, concrete saws, core saw, compressor blowers, vacuum hoses, air lances, and hand tools
  • Coordinate with engineers, surveyors, clients, and local agencies to communicate project status and address field conditions
  • Assist with QA/QC review of field data and documentation to uphold McKim & Creed quality standards
  • Support records research (QL-D) and utility surveying (QL-C) activities as needed
