The SUE Field Technician designates underground utilities in rural and urban environments using geophysical equipment, field documentation and survey methods, and vacuum excavation. The role manages individual 2D QL-B and 3D QL-B mapping projects, typically involving no more than two independent crews or teams, and selects and applies specialized surface geophysical equipment to designate complex public and private utility systems. The technician collects and completes data and reports for 3D mapping projects and gravity-flow utility structures, conducts horizontal and vertical surveys using total station, RTK GPR, and automatic or digital level equipment, and leads vacuum excavation crews in exposing and backfilling test holes. The position also coordinates with clients, utility and property owners, traffic-control providers, and other third parties in the field, and interprets plans, profiles, cross sections, and utility records. Extensive travel is required, with 80–90% of the year on the road and individual trips typically lasting one to two weeks.
