Rennscot MFG•Woburn, MA
•$19 - $24•Onsite

About The Position

Rennscot MFG is seeking a hands-on Subtractive Manufacturing Engineering Co-Op to contribute to production work, process improvements, and documentation in a precision manufacturing environment. The co-op will work alongside experienced engineers and machinists and gain exposure to 3-, 4-, and 5-axis machining, CNC programming, fixture design, and quality system requirements. Candidates must be local to the Boston, Massachusetts area for consideration. The 12-week co-op includes supporting CNC programming and machine operations, developing and refining workholding solutions, documenting manufacturing processes, and participating in continuous improvement and production problem-solving. The co-op will also support other departments and projects as business needs require and complete an end-of-term summary of contributions, lessons learned, and recommended improvements. Rennscot MFG is an advanced manufacturing services provider located in Woburn, Massachusetts, offering reverse engineering, metal and polymer additive manufacturing, and precision machining. The role is subject to ITAR eligibility requirements: applicants must be U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, protected individuals under the cited law, or eligible to obtain required U.S. Department of State authorizations.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited bachelor's degree program in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Basic exposure to machining principles and subtractive manufacturing concepts through coursework, lab work, or prior experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, including foundational understanding of GD&T.
  • Hands-on, mechanically curious, detail-oriented, and able to communicate clearly and collaborate with machinists, engineers, and quality staff.
  • Must be local to the Boston, Massachusetts area for consideration.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain required U.S. Department of State authorizations to meet ITAR requirements.
  • Able to meet the physical demands described, including regular computer workstation use and standing or walking on the manufacturing floor; occasional lifting and carrying of tooling, fixturing, or materials up to 25 lbs; and visual acuity to read drawings and inspect parts.
  • Wear personal protective equipment on the shop floor, including safety glasses, hearing protection, and steel-toed footwear.

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of foundational coursework in manufacturing processes, materials, or engineering design.
  • Exposure to CAM software such as hyperMILL, ESPRIT, Fusion 360, or similar platforms.
  • Exposure to CAD software such as Fusion 360, SolidWorks, or similar.
  • Basic understanding of G-code and CNC machine setup fundamentals.
  • Experience operating CNC mills or lathes, with familiarity with Heidenhain, Okuma, or Haas CNC controllers.
  • Exposure to Lean Manufacturing or Six Sigma principles through coursework or prior experience.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with creating, simulating, and verifying CNC programs for 3-, 4-, and 5-axis milling and turning centers using hyperMILL, ESPRIT, and Fusion 360.
  • Support machine setups, prove-out runs, and first-article validation alongside machinists and engineers.
  • Operate CNC machinery as needed for prototype and production work, including basic setup, inspection, and troubleshooting.
  • Support the design and fabrication of workholding and fixturing solutions to improve setup repeatability and minimize cycle time.
  • Collaborate with machinists and engineers to evaluate and refine fixturing based on production feedback.
  • Document machining processes, tooling lists, and setup sheets to support repeatability and quality system compliance.
  • Help develop clear, complete written work instructions that enable others to manufacture parts independently.
  • Update process documentation to reflect current best practices and changes implemented during the co-op.
  • Identify at least one continuous improvement opportunity, propose a solution, and support implementation with engineering team guidance.
  • Participate in root cause analysis and corrective action activities for production issues.
  • Contribute to projects involving machine utilization, process capability, workplace organization (5S), tool paths, cutting strategies, and manufacturing process improvement.
  • Support Quality, Additive Manufacturing, Assembly, and other departments as business demand requires.
  • Attend team meetings and contribute to discussions.
  • Complete an end-of-term summary documenting contributions, lessons learned, and recommended improvements for handoff to the engineering team.
