2026.27 Lower School-Substitute Teacher
About The Position
The Out-of-Door Academy seeks Substitute Teachers for its Lower School campuses on Siesta Key and Clark Road. The role supports a student-centered learning experience by following directions from the school office and lead teacher, delivering assigned work, adapting instruction to students’ needs, and supervising students throughout the school day. The position reports to the Head of Lower School and is temporary, non-exempt, with availability varying according to the school’s needs. Substitute assignments are typically made when a lead teacher is absent. Applicants should indicate their preferred campus location or locations in their cover letter. Regular substitutes are paid $20.00 per hour, for up to 8 hours per day. Long-term substitutes are paid $22.00 per hour, for up to 8 hours per day; the long-term rate begins on the 21st consecutive day of the same assignment. After an offer is accepted, the successful candidate must complete a national background screening and drug testing.
Requirements
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Computer literacy and proficiency.
- Ability to develop rapport with students and enjoy working with them.

Responsibilities
- Follow instructions from the school office and lead teacher to support engaging student learning.
- Assign classwork and homework as prescribed by the teacher.
- Adapt instructional style to meet students’ learning needs.
- Supervise students outside the classroom, including in hallways, at lunch and recess, and during drop-off and pick-up when required.
- Ensure classroom instruction follows the school’s policies, goals, and objectives.
- Manage student behavior and maintain classroom order.
- Take necessary and reasonable action to ensure the safety of students, materials, and school equipment.
- Follow up on instructions left by the lead teacher and ensure they are carried out appropriately.
