About The Position

This position involves carrying out the absent teacher's prepared lesson plans. During a prolonged absence, the substitute is responsible for performing all essential functions identified in the absent teacher’s job description. The role requires maintaining a positive learning environment, stimulating student interest, and varying instructional techniques to address individual learning styles. Substitutes will provide guidance, communicate high expectations, and show an active interest in student progress, while facilitating critical-thinking, problem-solving, and creativity skills. The position also involves working cooperatively with school staff, incorporating technology in records management and instructional activities, and upholding computer technology acceptable use policies. Accurate record-keeping and timely submission of reports are essential, as is respecting personal privacy and maintaining the confidentiality of privileged information. Substitutes are required to stay for the entire workday.

Requirements

  • High school diploma.
  • Meets all mandated health requirements (i.e. a negative tuberculosis test, etc.).
  • Documentation of clear criminal work record.
  • Complies with drug-free workplace rules and board policies.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to assume all the duties and responsibilities of the regular teacher.
  • Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees, students, and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact.
  • Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to a personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine.
  • Frequent walking, standing, occasional lifting up to 25 pounds may be required.
  • Occasional travel with students on field trips may be required.
  • Occasional movement of students by wheel chairs and other mechanical devices may be required.
  • Regular instruction to special needs children may be necessary.
  • Daily personal and close contact with students to provide classroom management and learning environment support is required.
  • Regular contact with other staff members and parents is required.
  • Occasional contact with medical professionals may be required.
  • Frequent contact with parents by phone and in person is necessary.
  • Substitutes are required to stay for the entire workday.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares a written summary of work completed.
  • Communicates special situations or problems encountered with the absent teacher.
  • Upholds board policies and follows administrative procedures.
  • Promotes a favorable image of the school division.
  • Implements effective pupil management procedures.
  • Maintains high standards and upholds the student conduct code.
  • Develops and maintains a positive learning environment.
  • Stimulates student interest.
