About The Position

The Alabama School for the Deaf (ASD) is seeking a Substitute Teacher Aide to perform duties in the absence of full-time AIDB staff. The Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind (AIDB) is the world’s most comprehensive education, rehabilitation, and service program serving individuals of all ages who are Deaf, Blind, DeafBlind, multidisabled, and their families. Founded in 1858, AIDB serves more than 30,000 infants, toddlers, children, adults, and senior citizens with hearing and vision loss throughout Alabama each year. Our services span a lifetime and include five campuses in Talladega, a statewide network of regional centers, Early Intervention services, traditional and nontraditional educational opportunities in residential, day, and outreach settings, and a manufacturing facility known as Alabama Industries for the Blind (AIB), the state’s largest employer of adults who are Blind. AIDB’s three K-12 schools — Alabama School for the Blind, Alabama School for the Deaf, and Helen Keller School of Alabama — provide specialized educational services that empower students to achieve their full potential. Requirements

  • Must possess a high school diploma or GED.
  • Must have a sign language proficiency level of Survival Plus according the AIDB evaluation system upon hire.
  • Must be physically able to perform job.
  • Must follow all AIDB policies and procedures and state and federal laws.
  • Must have the ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Must be able and will be expected to physically assist assigned students who use wheelchairs or have physical disabilities as their needs dictate, including the ability to lift fifty (50) pounds frequently during the work shift and to lift more than fifty pounds with assistance or the use of an assistive device.
  • Upon offer of employment, the applicant must submit to a fingerprint background check at an agency designated and paid by AIDB.

Responsibilities

  • Perform duties in the absence of full-time AIDB staff as required for position.
  • Must remain awake and alert at all times.
  • Must be able to adhere to confidentiality requirements.
  • Must be able to handle emergency situations in a calm manner.
  • Must work cooperatively with other school personnel to serve students.
