About The Position

The Alabama School for the Blind (ASB) is seeking to fill a Substitute Teacher Aide position. This role involves performing duties in the absence of full-time AIDB staff, ensuring the smooth operation of educational services for students who are Deaf, Blind, DeafBlind, or have other disabilities. The Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind (AIDB) is a comprehensive educational, rehabilitation, and service program serving individuals of all ages with hearing and vision loss and their families. Founded in 1858, AIDB serves over 30,000 individuals annually across Alabama through its various campuses, regional centers, and specialized schools, including the Alabama School for the Blind, Alabama School for the Deaf, and Helen Keller School of Alabama.

Requirements

  • Must possess a high school diploma or GED.
  • Must be physically able to perform the job.
  • Must follow all AIDB policies and procedures and state and federal laws.
  • Must be able to lift fifty (50) pounds frequently during the work shift and to lift more than fifty pounds with assistance or the use of an assistive device.
  • Upon offer of employment, the applicant must submit to a fingerprint background check at an agency designated and paid by AIDB.

Responsibilities

  • Perform duties in the absence of full-time AIDB staff as required for the position.
  • Physically assist assigned students who use wheelchairs or have physical disabilities as their needs dictate.
  • Work cooperatively with other school personnel to serve students.
  • Remain awake and alert at all times.
  • Adhere to confidentiality requirements.
  • Handle emergency situations in a calm manner.
  • Follow written and verbal instructions.
