About The Position

Substitute nurse temporarily fills the role of a health office nurse during their absence, ensuring continuity of care and maintaining a safe, positive environment. The substitute follows established protocols and procedures; assists in managing chronic student conditions and supports students’ health and social needs throughout the school day.

Requirements

• Valid license to practice as a Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse in Massachusetts.
• Current certification in CPR/AED.
• Must hold an RN or LPN license
• CPR/AED certified

Nice To Haves

• Minimum 1 year Pediatric and/or Urgent care experience preferred.
• Prior school nurse experience preferred.
• Strong communication, organization, and assessment skills.
• Experience with electronic medical records.

Responsibilities

• Performs school nursing services under the supervision of the School Nurse Leader consistent with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health guidelines in addition to the local school district policy.
• Provides assessment and medical care for students and staff in the case of injury or illness as needed.
• Maintains appropriate documentation including electronic school health records, daily logs, medication administration, accident/incident report, and special needs encounters.
• Integrates health education in daily practice.
• Identifies the needs of students and staff and teaches health promotion and disease prevention as needed.
• Provides health education and counseling on an individual basis as needed to students, staff, and parents.
• Demonstrates and applies current nursing knowledge in school practice.
• Participates in ongoing professional development to maintain Massachusetts Registered Nurse License.
