About The Position

The Substitute Instructional Assistant assists classroom teachers in carrying out group and individual instruction for deaf students in educational departments as needed. The role supports students’ classroom progress and a positive learning environment, provides one-on-one instruction or coaching at the teacher’s request, and helps prepare classroom materials. Depending on the situation and department, the assistant may also help with students’ physical care and mobility, escort students between classes, and supervise the gym and other common areas. The role supports the school’s Strategic Planning initiatives and demonstrates commitment to the school’s purpose, vision, and mission.

Requirements

• Regents or Local High School Diploma, or GED.
• Flexible, patient, dependable, and consistently demonstrates good judgment.
• Able to perform job functions with attention to time and attendance.
• Team player with good interactive skills.
• Positive attitude toward students and commitment to providing a positive learning environment.
• Required clearances include medical clearance, fingerprinting by the NYC Board of Education, and SCR and SEL clearance.
• Able to tolerate prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer, and prolonged periods walking in and around the building.
• Able to lift 15 pounds at times.

Nice To Haves

• Experience working with adolescents is preferred.
• Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL), or willingness to learn.

Responsibilities

• Maintain and monitor students’ classroom progress and support a positive classroom culture and environment.
• Provide one-on-one instruction or coaching to students as requested by the teacher.
• Assist in preparing classroom materials.
• Assist with students’ physical care and/or classroom needs, including feeding, dressing, toileting, and ambulation as needed.
• Escort physically limited students from class to class.
• Assist students with mobility.
• Supervise the gym area and other common areas as needed.
• Support the school’s Strategic Planning initiatives, with an emphasis on strengthening the culture, and demonstrate commitment to the school’s purpose, vision, and mission.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
