About The Position

This recruitment is for substitute employment only, on an as-needed basis, working 5.75 or 6 hours per day between 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Positions allocated to this class are assigned to assist a teacher or specialist in providing academic, social, and community-based instruction and assistance to individuals or small groups of students with a wide range of significant disabilities, including autism and/or intellectual disabilities. This position performs special duties relative to the needs of each special education student, in addition to performing the regular duties typical of the Substitute Instructional Assistant (Classroom). This position serves as a Substitute Instructional Assistant to teachers. Full responsibility for appropriate instruction, training, curriculum materials, and evaluation procedures remains with the teacher.

Requirements

  • Consistent with No Child Left Behind Act of 2002 and other related legislation, candidates must meet the following standards: Graduation from high school and one of the following: Completion of at least two years of study (48 semester units or 60 quarter units) at an institution of higher education; OR Attainment of an Associate of Arts degree or higher degree; OR Meeting a rigorous standard of quality by receiving a passing score in an examination administered by the Personnel Commission which demonstrates the knowledge and ability to assist in instructing, reading, writing and mathematics.

Responsibilities

  • Observes and supports behavior of students in the classroom and during outdoor activities according to approved procedures.
  • Provides support for students who are fully included in regular education classes.
  • Assists a certificated teacher in providing instruction to individuals or small groups of limited or non-English speaking students in a classroom environment by interpreting written materials and oral lectures.
  • Serves as an interpreter for teachers or non-English speaking parents.
  • Applies behavior management and Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) techniques which are evidence-based for students exhibiting aggressive behaviors due to their emotional disturbance, ASD, or intellectual disabilities.
  • Implements supportive interventions designed to compliment the student's Behavior Support Plan (BSP).
  • Provides specific job training and work site job coaching.
  • Acts as a liaison between adult students and work sites in the community.
