About The Position

Under the general supervision of the Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds and direction of the Grounds Coordinator, this position serves as a member of the district grounds maintenance team on an as needed basis. The role involves performing routine tasks necessary to the preparation, maintenance, and repair of the district grounds and playground equipment, as well as a wide variety of routine and preventative maintenance grounds duties.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED
  • Valid Washington State Driver’s license
  • State/FBI background clearance required
  • Know and observe good safety procedures; maintain safe working conditions; comply with safety rules and regulations
  • Follow efficient and safe work protocols and plans of action to insure the safety of self and others
  • Insure safe and proper use of District's vehicles and equipment
  • Obtain and maintain all licenses and certificates necessary to accomplish assigned duties and responsibilities
  • Must be punctual and dependable, able to work and communicate effectively with others, have ability to perform heavy physical labor
  • Duties include working outside in variable weather conditions and seasons.
  • Follow directions from Supervisory staff and Tumwater School District policies and procedures
  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation

Nice To Haves

  • Two years of experience in turf management, heavy equipment operation, or irrigation system installation/repair is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Operate hand tools and motorized equipment, including but not limited to: weed trimmers, power edgers, hand mowers, riding mowers, fertilizer spreaders, grass seeders, hedge trimmers, chain saws, backpack blowers, sump pumps, and wood chippers.
  • Drive a pickup and tow a trailer.
  • Use technology, computers and programs for operation of SafeSchools, Outlook, Skyward/Qmlativ, and K12 software.
  • Mow, line trim, edge, and perform general landscaping on school district property.
  • Blow down parking lots.
  • Pressure wash.
  • Prepare and line athletic playing fields for practices and games.
  • Assist fulltime staff with playground repairs.
  • Assist fulltime staff with herbicide spraying and fertilizing.
  • Prune shrubs, hedges and trees.
  • Rake, sweep and remove leaves and debris from school grounds.
  • Maintain and repair signs, gates, fences, sidewalks, driveways, parking areas, tracks, tennis courts, flag poles and storm drain/retention pond systems.
  • Clean gutters.
  • Litter/garbage removal.
  • Assist with loading, unloading, and moving of supplies, debris, and materials.
  • Flower bed maintenance.
  • Maintain assigned district vehicles and equipment.
  • Plant or transplant bulbs, tree seedlings and shrubs.
  • Apply ice melt and assist with snow removal during winter months.
  • Assist fulltime staff with the maintenance and repairs of irrigation equipment and systems.
  • Provide warehouse assistance, including moving surplus and district furniture.
  • Painting exterior surfaces.
  • Graffiti removal.
  • Protect the facilities, resources and interests of the district regarding pilferage, loss, theft, or abuse.
  • Other duties as assigned.
