Substitute Classroom Assistant
About The Position
This position involves providing support in a classroom setting, primarily focusing on the safety, well-being, and care of children. The Substitute Classroom Assistant will function as a primary caregiver for a group of children and will assist the teacher in various classroom activities, including curriculum implementation, daily program execution, room decoration, meal service, maintaining classroom order, assisting with personal care needs, and laundering materials. The role also requires participation in team and staff meetings, attending in-services for continuing education, and temporarily assuming teacher responsibilities in their absence. Adherence to center policies, state regulations, and accreditation standards is crucial. The position also entails reporting suspected child abuse or neglect, assisting with field trips, and supervising substitutes and volunteers.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Wisconsin state certified classes in Early Childhood I and Early Childhood II.
- Strong nurturing skills.
- Understand and follow written and verbal directions.
- Read, write, and basic math skills.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Positive and friendly attitude.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Ability to function effectively in a team setting.
- Ability to adjust to various work changes that occur throughout the day.
- Ability to cope with changes in routine to accommodate needs of the school.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks at a time.
- Ability to continually interact with co-workers, parents and children in a positive manner.
- Maintain strict client confidentiality.
Nice To Haves
- CDA or Associates degree in Early Childhood.
- Wisconsin certified Infants and Toddlers class (required for working with children under two).
Responsibilities
- Supervise and ensure the safety and well-being of children at all times.
- Act as the primary caregiver for a group of children.
- Assist the teacher in planning and implementing curriculum.
- Implement the daily program.
- Decorate the room and/or bulletin boards.
- Serve meals and snacks.
- Maintain neat and orderly classroom and storage areas.
- Assist children with toilet needs where applicable.
- Launder classroom materials and wash/disinfect toys.
- Assist in all personal care aspects of the children.
- Follow teacher directions regarding staffing needs.
- Attend and participate in team meetings, staff meetings, and staffing.
- Attend scheduled on-site in-services and complete annual continuing education.
- Temporarily assume responsibilities of the teacher in their absence.
- Be familiar with and follow all center policies, procedures, state regulations, and accreditation standards.
- Report suspected child abuse and neglect to the teacher.
- Attend and assist with field trips.
- Assist teacher in supervising and directing subs and volunteers.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
