About The Position

In accordance with the law, serve as a Substitute Associate Judge reporting to the designated Presiding Judge. Serve on call, as scheduled, as judge for cases involving Class "C' misdemeanors and as magistrate for defendants arrested by the El Paso Police Department and other local law enforcement agencies. This is an Appointed On-Call position for the City of El Paso Municipal Court. This position requires evening, night, weekend, and holiday shifts. Associate Judges will be scheduled for these shifts. Must be available to substitute during normal business hours, Monday-Friday. Must handle a high volume of work in a fast-paced environment.

Requirements

  • Must be a licensed attorney in good standing in the State of Texas.
  • Must have had two or more years of experience in the practice of criminal law in Texas.
  • Must have lived in the City of El Paso during the preceding 12 months.
  • Must be a resident of Texas.
  • Considerable knowledge of Texas State Law and City of El Paso Ordinances governing misdemeanor offenses, including conditions pertaining to juvenile defendants.
  • Considerable knowledge of court protocols and procedures.
  • Ability to adjudicate a significant volume of cases promptly and efficiently.
  • Ability to clearly and concisely explain pertinent legal information to affected parties.
  • Ability to fairly and impartially enforce judicial authority.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a Substitute Associate Judge reporting to the designated Presiding Judge.
  • Serve on call, as scheduled, as judge for cases involving Class "C' misdemeanors and as magistrate for defendants arrested by the El Paso Police Department and other local law enforcement agencies.
  • Serve as scheduled for temporary court under the direction of the Presiding Judge, as judge for cases involving Class "C' misdemeanors and as magistrate for defendants arrested by the El Paso Police Department and other local law enforcement agencies.
  • Serve as judge at trial sessions, pretrial sessions, civil parking hearings, and other court hearings.
  • Serve as magistrate on day, evening, graveyard, weekend, and holiday shifts.
  • Handle a significant volume of cases impartially and efficiently.
  • Advise defendants and other interested parties of charges, rights, legal opinions, and rulings.
  • Review documents presented to establish proof of legal compliance.
  • Assess judgment and fines.
  • Record determinations of court.
  • Hear preliminary pre-trial motions.
  • Handle additional cases as assigned by the presiding judge.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
