About The Position

The Probate Associate Judge handles assigned cases from initiation to completion, presides over hearings, conducts legal research, and issues orders for Beaufort County. Duties also include: supervising assigned staff, drafting Court policies, and preparing administrative reports.

Requirements

  • Requires a Juris Doctor degree
  • Two (2) years of related work experience
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Admission to the practice of law in South Carolina

Responsibilities

  • Presides over hearings and trials before the Court, both in the courthouse, hospitals, and other locations; addresses issues and written rulings/orders in connection with these hearings/trials.
  • Supervises Probate Court personnel including clerks in the performance of their duties.
  • Trains Court staff.
  • Reviews and conducts legal research regarding matters pending before the Court; renders opinion to the Judge and Court staff.
  • Interfaces with lawyers, the general public, and others doing business with the Court including officials of other government agencies.
  • Delivers presentations at seminars for lawyers, judges, hospital staff, and law enforcement on various legal matters.
  • Prepares reports for the County and Court Administration.
  • Performs other related duties of a similar nature or level.
