About The Position

Dominion Energy Virginia is offering an exciting opportunity for an experienced engineer/technical specialist to join our Electric Transmission - Substation Engineering department! As a member of the physical design team, you’ll play a crucial role in shaping the future of our high-voltage electric grid, which operates from 69 kV to 500 kV. This opportunity will be involved with greenfield and brownfield projects, data center related projects, and renewable generation interconnect projects, to name a few. The successful candidate will be motivated and engaged, passionate about their work, eager to innovate, and ready to contribute to our dynamic team. You’ll be involved in the development of detailed design and construction review, focusing on the physical design of electrical substations for both new construction and upgrades to existing facilities. You’ll apply your expertise in substation physical design, including creating and maintaining standard drawings for electrical, mechanical, and control systems. This includes developing engineering packages, performing calculations, conducting analysis, and ensuring compliance with industry standards. You’ll exercise independent judgment, evaluating and selecting engineering techniques and criteria, and adapt to moderately complex challenges, making necessary modifications to achieve optimal results. You’ll prepare and review critical substation documents, such as one-line diagrams, general arrangements, elevations, conduit and foundation plans, cable schedules, ground grid plans, and bills of materials. Collaboration with other disciplines, including grading plan development, steel structures, and bus design, will be essential. You will also engage in site visits to support construction activities and utilize modeling tools (preferably AutoCAD and/or Microstation). Experience in 3D Design or Autodesk Inventor will be advantageous.

Requirements

  • Engineer - 2+ years of experience Substation Physical Engineering or demonstrated equivalent.
  • Sr. Engineer - 5+ years of experience Substation Physical Engineering or demonstrated equivalent.
  • Staff Engineer - 8+ years of experience Substation Physical Engineering or demonstrated equivalent.
  • Engineering Technical Specialist II - 3+ years of relevant work experience in a technical role with a preferred bachelor’s degree (Or 5 years of relevant work experience in a technical role with an associate degree)
  • Engineering Technical Specialist III - 5+ years of relevant work experience in a technical role with a preferred bachelor’s degree (Or 7 years of relevant work experience in a technical role with an associate degree)
  • Experience with Electric Utility preferred
  • Thorough understanding of the principles and practices for transmission lines, distribution feeders, and major substation components.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and verify accuracy of one-line diagrams
  • Knowledge of MicroStation and / or AutoCAD
  • Knowledge and application of engineering theories and principles, concepts, and fundamentals
  • Competency in applying engineering principles, fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures requiring some evaluation, originality and/or ingenuity to achieve project objectives
  • Planning, organizational and project management skills
  • Effective decision-making skills
  • Effective oral and written communication skills (includes technical writing)
  • Ability to think analytically and solve complex problems
  • Ability to interpret codes, regulations, and practices

  • Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an ABET accredited Engineering program based on the year that the Engineering program was accredited by ABET, or
  • Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an institution outside of the U.S. which is accredited through the country's own Engineering accrediting body under the Washington Accord as a full signatory, and is a degree that was recognized by the country's accrediting body on or after the date that full signatory status was achieved, or
  • Possess a 4-year degree in Engineering (non-ABET accredited), Physics, Chemistry, Math or Engineering Technology and a post-graduate Engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same Engineering discipline is ABET-accredited based on the year the Engineering program was accredited by ABET, or
  • Holds or has previously held a valid U.S. Professional Engineer license.
  • For Engineering Technical Specialist II or III: Preferred Bachelor's degree
  • In order to be a titled Engineering Technical Specialist, you must meet one of the following criteria:
  • 4-year Engineering Technology degree or 4-year degree in Engineering (not ABET-accredited); or
  • 4-year degree in Physics, Math, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Engineering or other technical related discipline; or
  • 4-year non-technical degree and post-graduate degree in Engineering Technology or Engineering (not ABET-accredited); or
  • Equivalent combination of education and relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of preferred degree

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in 3D Design or Autodesk Inventor will be advantageous.
