About The Position

RMS Energy is seeking a Substation Engineer to support the engineering, design, and execution of substation modernization and brownfield upgrade projects. The role serves as both technical lead and primary customer contact, managing assigned projects from initial concept through final delivery and providing high-quality engineering solutions. Work includes Protection & Control (P&C) design for transmission and distribution substations, equipment and control-system replacements, and revision of existing electrical drawings and documentation. The engineer prepares project scopes, estimates, schedules, and technical deliverables; coordinates with customers and internal engineering, drafting, procurement, and field teams; and reviews deliverables for accuracy and compliance with codes, standards, and customer specifications. The position may also support field activities, commissioning, troubleshooting, and resolution of technical issues. Work can take place in office and field environments, including around energized electrical equipment. The role supports remote work with minimal supervision and requires 15–20% travel across the continental United States, with extended and irregular hours as needed.

Requirements

  • 3–5 years of hands-on electrical engineering experience, including protection and control and substation design, with involvement in system design, analysis, and optimization.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related field from an accredited institution; additional experience may substitute for formal education in specific cases.
  • Experience with relay replacements, breaker replacements, RTU replacements, and control system modernization.
  • Foundational knowledge of electrical systems, wiring practices, and equipment, with developing expertise in system design and implementation.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and ability to use technical tools such as AutoCAD for design support.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Ability to work remotely with minimal supervision.
  • Willingness to travel 15–20% across the continental U.S.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Must successfully complete a background check and pre-employment and random drug tests.
  • Availability for extended and irregular hours as needed.
  • Comfort working in both office and field environments.
  • Ability to lift 20+ lbs and navigate uneven surfaces and elevated work areas.
  • Good vision and hearing, and English proficiency for safe, effective communication in noisy environments.

Nice To Haves

  • NETA Level 2 or Level 3, FE, or EIT licensure or certification; indicates commitment to professional development and eventual PE licensure.
  • Exposure to electrical modeling software such as SKM PowerTools, ETAP, or EasyPower.
  • Strong collaboration skills and ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills, including presenting technical information to engineering and non-technical audiences.
  • Organizational and time-management skills, including managing multiple tasks and meeting deadlines with guidance from senior engineers.
  • Motivation and self-direction, with the ability to work independently on defined tasks while seeking guidance when appropriate.

Responsibilities

  • Design and support brownfield substation upgrades and modernization projects.
  • Develop Protection & Control (P&C) designs for transmission and distribution substations.
  • Support relay replacements, breaker replacements and changeouts, RTU replacements, control system upgrades, and ground grid modifications.
  • Update and revise electrical drawings, schematics, wiring diagrams, and documentation to reflect system modifications.
  • Serve as a primary engineering contact for assigned customers, providing technical support and maintaining communication throughout project execution.
  • Prepare project scopes, engineering estimates, schedules, and technical deliverables.
  • Participate in customer meetings and provide engineering updates throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Coordinate with internal engineering, drafting, procurement, and field teams to support project execution.
  • Review engineering deliverables for technical accuracy and compliance with applicable codes, industry standards, and customer specifications.
  • Support field activities, commissioning, troubleshooting, and technical issue resolution as needed.
  • Collaborate with field teams and other engineering disciplines to support quality, efficiency, and customer satisfaction.
  • Follow safety procedures and standards while working around energized electrical equipment.
