About The Position

HealthPartners is hiring a Subrogation Specialist. The Subrogation Specialist represents HealthPartners’ interests in subrogation recovery activities as a member of the Payment Integrity Team. This position independently manages routine and complex subrogation cases to successful resolution by evaluating liability, causation, contractual rights, and applicable statutory and case law. Through effective negotiation, advocacy, and legal analysis, the Subrogation Specialist pursues maximum recovery on behalf of HealthPartners while ensuring accurate documentation, compliance, and appropriate escalation of legal matters.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Paralegal, Insurance, or a Health‑related field or seven (7) years of related experience
  • Five (5) or more years of insurance litigation or subrogation program experience
  • Demonstrates an understanding of tort theories and subrogation principles
  • Ability to review and interpret medical reports, contractual language, statutory law, and case law
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Proven negotiation skills
  • Analytical with a strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to make independent decisions and manage adverse parties
  • Demonstrated planning, organizational, and time management skills
  • Reliable and regular attendance
  • Reliable transportation for limited local travel

Responsibilities

  • Obtain information from a variety of sources necessary to pursue subrogation claims to a successful conclusion.
  • Monitor assigned files timely and determine appropriate next actions.
  • Review medical claims and subrogation files and generate pleadings and correspondence to courts, insurers, and opposing parties.
  • Interpret member contractual terms, statutory law, and case law to determine HealthPartners’ subrogation rights.
  • Record all relevant case information in the Subrogation Case Management System.
  • Maintain organized, accurate, and complete case files.
  • Identify matters requiring Subrogation Supervisor or outside counsel involvement.
  • Exercise discretion and independent judgment to evaluate and settle HealthPartners’ subrogation claims against responsible parties.
  • Analyze liability, causation, contractual rights, and current case law when determining settlement strategy and outcomes.
  • Respond to settlement demands and legal positions consistent with HealthPartners’ interests and applicable law.
  • Draft accurate, professional, and persuasive written correspondence to attorneys, insurers, courts, and other parties.
  • Attend settlement conferences, pre‑trials, hearings, and mediations as a representative of HealthPartners.
  • Present evidence to opposing parties and administrative law judges to support HealthPartners’ claims.
  • Act as an advocate for HealthPartners regarding the legal and substantive posture of assigned cases.
  • Coordinate with HealthPartners’ Claims Departments to identify potential subrogation cases.
  • Gather factual and claims information necessary to assert specific subrogation rights.
  • Maintain and monitor accurate internal data related to assigned claims.
  • Provide subrogation guidance and training to the Payment Integrity Team
