About The Position

The Fund for Public Health in New York City (FPHNYC) is seeking Study Interviewers/Recruiters for the National HIV Behavioral Surveillance Study (NHBS)–MSM2026 cycle. This is a temporary, part-time position until December 2026 or until the sample size of 550 participants is met. The role involves recruiting participants at or outside venues where men who have sex with men (MSM) congregate, conducting confidential standardized quantitative interviews using a study tablet, and adhering to strict survey research protocols. The position requires strong attention to detail, the ability to comply with confidentiality protocols, and the capacity to establish rapport with diverse populations. Training will be provided for all study activities. Evening, night, and weekend hours will be required.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Must be willing to work evenings, nights (possibly until 3am) and weekends.
  • Willing to travel throughout NYC.
  • Ability to learn and use computerized interview programs.
  • Strong oral communication skills.
  • Comfortable asking questions about health, sex, drug use, and stigma/discrimination.
  • Ability to create a comfortable and non-judgmental interview environment.
  • Ability to work as part of a research team.
  • Comfortable working in venues and locations where sexual activity occurs.
  • Must live in the New York City Tri-state area (NY, NJ, CT).

Nice To Haves

  • Proficiency in Spanish
  • Experience working with MSM is an advantage, but not required.
  • Ability to interact with a diverse population in a friendly, non-judgmental and affirmative manner.
  • Experience working in fast-paced, people-facing environments

Responsibilities

  • Recruit participants outside bars/clubs, events, and other locations where MSM congregate.
  • Conduct in-person standardized surveys with study participants.
  • Screen potential participants for eligibility and obtain informed consent.
  • Prepare and maintain interview materials and supplies.
  • Comply with guidelines for maintaining safety, data security, and participant confidentiality.
  • Follow local safety procedures and report any incidents and adverse events to the Study Operations Supervisor (SOS) immediately.
  • Maintain data integrity (i.e., accurately document participant information on paper and electronic forms) and maintain participant confidentiality.
  • Participate in all NYC Health Department and CDC required trainings.
  • Assist with other related duties as assigned.
