About The Position

The Study Abroad Advisor is responsible for guiding undergraduate students through all aspects of study abroad, from program selection to post-return. This includes providing information through sessions and one-on-one advising, offering pre-departure guidance, supporting students while they are overseas, and assisting with their re-entry. The advisor must have a comprehensive understanding of all program types, partners, and providers, and contribute to program assessment regarding curricular needs, student support, and health and safety. A significant part of the role involves one-on-one student engagement to ensure the best academic and personal program fit, while also managing transfer credits and graduation timelines. The advisor collaborates with campus partners to prepare students for safe overseas experiences and to ensure smooth administrative processes, including registration, transfer credit, financial aid portability, and scholarship selection. The role also involves utilizing the office’s management system, coordinating promotional events, and representing the office at various functions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • One or more (1+) years of experience in international education
  • Advanced ability to work collaboratively with faculty and staff
  • Excellent organizational and computer skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including empathy and tact
  • Independence and initiative
  • Exceptional problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Ability to prioritize

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s Degree
  • Two years of related full-time experience
  • Substantial experience studying, living, or working overseas
  • Experience in advising in a higher education setting
  • Personal experience in studying abroad or working overseas
  • Proficiency in a foreign language

Responsibilities

  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of Rice’s approved study-abroad programs
  • Advises students on program selection, academics, finances, health and safety, and policies & administration
  • Guides students through the transfer credit process / obtaining credit approval
  • Determines individual student readiness to undertake study abroad
  • Provides support with, evaluates, and approves student applications
  • Assists with study abroad orientations and presentations
  • Maintains contact with students while abroad
  • Participates in post‐return programming
  • Performs other duties as assigned
  • Reviews potential new program offerings
  • Identifies potential risks for students planning on study abroad
  • Liaises with campus partners and program representatives
  • Creates promotional materials and assists with website maintenance
  • Actively engages in campus‐wide activities/programming to promote study abroad
  • Involves study abroad students/alumni in activities promoting study abroad
  • Contributes to building the office’s digital library (presentation slides, recordings, etc.)
  • Keeps abreast of best practices in international education
