About The Position

Insight Magazine is a student-run feature magazine at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR), dedicated to producing informative, conversational, and relatable content for students. The magazine aims to be honest and thought-provoking through textual and visual work, offering contributors a unique platform to share their thoughts with the student body and the wider Northern Nevada community. The team explores various aspects of journalism, including writing, photography, graphic design, and public relations, providing students with practical experience in the publication industry. The Staff Writer's primary role is to create written content for both the print magazine and the website, contributing 2-3 articles per volume and additional online content as needed. Article lengths will vary from 400 to 1,000 words. This position requires strict adherence to deadlines set by the Editor-in-Chief and Copy Editor, and the Staff Writer will assist in ensuring volunteer writers stay on theme. Collaboration with the Copy Editor for revisions and editing is essential, as is participation in weekly team meetings to maintain effective communication.

Requirements

Understanding of Google Documents and Google Drive
Knowledge of AP Citation Style
Diverse writing/reading experience
Creativity towards written pieces
Organized, communicative, and collaborative
Ability to work nights and weekends
Commitment to the ethical and moral leadership development of students
Must submit 2 work samples in one combined document

Responsibilities

Create textual content for Insight’s print magazine and website
Revise written articles based on feedback from the Copy Editor and/or EIC
Mitigate spelling and grammatical errors found in drafts with the help of the Copy Editor
Adhere to strict deadlines
Attend weekly staff meetings
Distribute Insight Magazines
