The Atlantic is seeking an ambitious and relentless reporter to cover the intersection of technology and consumer culture. This is a role for someone who is obsessed with how—and why—Americans spend their money the way they do. The ideal candidate will be adept at magazine journalism and eager to produce engaging stories across a wide-ranging beat that encompasses e-commerce and retail, the influencer economy, marketing, travel, and more. The role might involve interrogating the companies and platforms that shape online shopping; analyzing the meaning of the latest trendy products and status symbols; and digging into the invisible logistics of how an item appears at your doorstep. This is for someone who is bursting with original ideas targeted at a general audience; someone who can move fast when a story breaks and go deep when the moment calls for it; and someone who can write clearly and stylishly on a deadline. The role will at times include night, early-morning, and weekend work.
