Student Worker - Sagebrush Assistant News Editor

About The Position

The Assistant News Editor is responsible for writing, editing, and pitching stories for The Nevada Sagebrush's news section. This role involves working closely with the News Editor to curate content, which may include writing articles, editing contributor work, and assisting with multimedia content creation. The position requires experience in news writing or editing, teamwork, and the ability to work under deadline pressure. A basic understanding of media ethics and media law, particularly as they apply to reporting on a college campus, is also necessary. Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills are essential for collaborating effectively in a fast-paced newsroom environment.

Requirements

  • Be a student of the University of Nevada, Reno.
  • Maintain a 2.00 GPA and be enrolled in at least 12 credits unless a graduating senior.
  • Have strong leadership and good news-judgment.
  • Must have experience with AP style and writing for print or online.
  • Have experience writing headlines.
  • Have a strong voice within articles and work well under deadline.
  • Should be familiar with current Sagebrush work (articles, multimedia, social media).
  • Should have experience with social media and Word Press.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud (especially InDesign) is preferred.
  • Experience with multimedia programs (Premiere Pro, Audition, After Effects) is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Help support the News Editor with timely edits to articles and multimedia content.
  • Edit articles and multimedia content for clarity, accuracy, style and AP standards.
  • Support section editors with editing workload and production needs.
  • Ensure timely articles submitted for edits are reviewed and returned the same day when necessary to meet publication deadlines.
  • Assist with volunteer recruitment, outreach and retention efforts.
  • Help organize fundraising initiatives, networking opportunities and community events.
  • Build and maintain relationships with campus organizations, community partners and media contacts.
  • Collaborate with staff to strengthen newsroom communication and workflow.
  • Uphold media ethics, newsroom standards and professional journalism practices.
  • Contribute reporting, writing and multimedia content as needed.
  • Mentor staff members and assist with onboarding and newsroom development.
