About The Position

The University of Nevada, Reno’s Writing & Speaking Center is seeking to hire Graduate Consultants. Graduate Consultants work with individual students and small groups to support academic, professional, personal, and creative projects. Consultants collaboratively facilitate writing, reading, and presentation focused sessions, provide feedback for essays reports, research papers and proposals, speeches/presentations, and help first-year through graduate level students develop writing, reading, and presenting strategies as well as develop their confidence as communicators. The University Writing & Speaking Center is hiring motivated students who value of all forms of communication and who want to help others develop their literacy skills. Our center provides a supportive work environment and encourages our student employees to develop skills that support them in their own learning and toward developing professional skills to meet their long-term goals. Students who are interested in developing technical communication skills and combining those with compassion and creativity to support learners are encouraged to apply.

Requirements

  • Candidate must be enrolled as a Graduate Student at the University of Nevada, Reno
  • Candidate must be enrolled in at least three (3) graduate credits
  • Candidate must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Candidate must possess strong writing and speaking skills within their discipline
  • Candidate must have effective interpersonal communication skills and basic computer familiarity
  • Candidate must possess the ability to work with students from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds

Nice To Haves

  • Candidates who are pursuing degrees in Engineering, Biology, Business, Economics, Anthropology, Geology, Community Health Sciences, and Nursing will be prioritized
  • Candidates with a 3.5+ GPA are preferred

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate online and in-person consultations in a timely manner
  • Use a collaborative and student-centered approach during consultations
  • Use UWSC protocols and processes to guide work
  • Value the development of communication skills for academic, personal, and professional interactions
  • Complete required training which includes: in-person training prior to each semester start, online training modules, and regularly scheduled Friday afternoon workshops throughout the semester
