About The Position

The General Labor Worker is responsible for providing essential labor support to the Physical Plant Department by assisting skilled trades personnel with maintenance, construction, grounds, renovation, moving, and campus improvement projects. This position performs a variety of manual labor tasks that contribute to the safe, efficient, and professional operation of AIDB's educational, residential, administrative, and support facilities. The General Labor Worker supports carpenters, maintenance mechanics, electricians, plumbers, HVAC technicians, painters, grounds personnel, and other maintenance staff while helping maintain the appearance, safety, and functionality of AIDB campuses. This position requires flexibility, teamwork, physical stamina, and the ability to perform a wide variety of duties in both indoor and outdoor environments.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 16 years of age.
  • Must be actively enrolled as a student at Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind (AIDB).
  • Must maintain satisfactory academic performance, attendance, and behavioral standing as determined by AIDB.
  • Must meet all employment eligibility requirements established by AIDB.
  • Wear all required personal protective equipment (PPE), follow safety instructions, participate in required safety meetings/training, and immediately report unsafe conditions, equipment malfunctions, accidents, or injuries.
  • Report to work on time, maintain acceptable personal hygiene and appropriate dress, properly care for AIDB property/tools, and notify supervisors promptly if unable to report to work.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality regarding student and employee information.
  • Must agree to comply with AIDB Student Handbook policies, employee policies applicable to student workers, PPD operating procedures, OSHA safety standards, drug-free workplace guidelines, harassment policies, and technology use policies.
  • Work under the direct supervision of designated Physical Plant Department personnel who will provide instruction, coaching, feedback, and performance monitoring.
  • Demonstrate dependability, initiative, respect, teamwork, responsibility, safe work habits, positive communication, a strong work ethic, and a willingness to learn.
  • Student apprentices shall only perform duties that are appropriate for their age, experience, and training, and shall NOT operate hazardous equipment unless permitted by law and authorized by AIDB.
  • Must successfully complete all required orientation and safety training prior to beginning work.
  • Performing manual labor duties appropriate for student workers in both indoor and outdoor settings.
  • Walking, standing, bending, reaching, lifting, and carrying maintenance supplies and light equipment.
  • Working under direct supervision while utilizing designated tools, personal protective equipment (PPE), and safety gear.

  • Failure to maintain active student status or comply with AIDB expectations may result in removal from the apprenticeship program.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with organizing maintenance shops, work areas, tools, equipment, supplies, and cleanliness of maintenance storage areas.
  • Stock maintenance materials, inventory items, and deliver tools and supplies to work locations.
  • Assist with furniture movement, assembling furniture, room setups, preparing classrooms and buildings for special events, and waste/recycling collection.
  • Wash windows and glass doors, clean air vents and return grilles, clean equipment and maintenance vehicles, and assist with painting preparation (taping and cleaning surfaces).
  • Replace light bulbs under direct supervision and promptly report facility/maintenance concerns to supervisors.
  • Pick up litter and debris throughout campus, and clean sidewalks and outdoor common areas.
  • Assist with landscaping projects, campus beautification, watering flowers, shrubs, and landscaped areas.
  • Assist with planting flowers and seasonal vegetation, and spread mulch under direct supervision.
  • Organize maintenance inventory, count inventory items, and restock commonly used supplies.
  • Label shelves, label storage locations, assist with receiving deliveries, and maintain organized warehouse areas.
