About The Position

The Associated Students of the University of Nevada (ASUN) is made up of every undergraduate student at the University of Nevada. ASUN provides a means for students to voice concerns and address issues at the university, local, state, national and international levels. The Department of IDEA Commissioners are responsible for tracking policies affecting students, researching diverse initiatives, coordinating events, educating students on diverse topics, empowering under-represented students, mediating communication with multicultural groups, and promoting department projects and events. Commissioners also act as liaisons for diverse student groups, highlight and address issues, plan events for designated groups, attend meetings, and mentor interns.

Requirements

  • Candidate must be enrolled at the University of Nevada, Reno
  • Maintain a 2.00 GPA and be enrolled in at least 7 credits
  • Perform all duties and instructions outlined by the ASUN Governing Documents
  • Uphold the Nevada Student Code of Conduct
  • Meet all deadlines set forth, attend all required meetings and training, work scheduled hours, properly complete and submit HR paperwork on time, assist in the promotion of the mission of ASUN and Nevada, behave in a manner that is ethical, maintain a high level of integrity
  • Other duties as called upon by my position

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in fields such as sociology, social justice, ethnic studies, gender studies, psychology, education, political science, or related social sciences fields through course of study, previous work experience, or extracurricular activities
  • Demonstrated involvement in initiatives or organizations focused on promoting inclusivity, diversity, and social justice
  • Knowledge of IDEA (Inclusivity, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility) principles, frameworks, and best practices, with an understanding of systemic inequities and intersectional identities
  • Ability to work effectively and respectfully with politically, ideologically, and culturally diverse people and communities
  • Excellent organization and project management skills in a team-based environment with multiple projects
  • Flexibility and adaptability within role; ability to time manage and prioritize tasks
  • Willingness to mentor an intern during the fall and spring semesters
  • Commitment to advancing the foundational pillars of the Home Means Nevada Platform through: Conducting direct outreach initiatives, climate surveys and focus groups to understand and support underrepresented groups, Sponsoring events through the Multicultural Center and student coalitions, such as the Multicultural Greek Council, to build visibility and grow spaces for community-building and activism, Developing strong connections with the Center for Student Engagement and other campus departments to increase awareness of student resources to promoting accessibility and student belonging, Highlighting identity-based communities on campus and in the local community consistently and throughout the academic year, Advancing initiatives for continued ADA and physical accessibility infrastructure improvements, Expanding understanding of institutional policies and procedures related to diversity, equity, and inclusion, including recruitment and retention efforts for underrepresented groups

Responsibilities

  • Track University, local, state and national policies that affect students, as well as research diverse and inclusive initiatives happening at other institutions.
  • Research and analyze policy and provide data for the Director to present to the Senate.
  • Coordinate and organize any events, initiatives and efforts to educate students, faculty and staff on diverse topics, and to empower under-represented students.
  • Mediate communication between the Department and various multicultural groups and organizations both on campus and in the community.
  • Aid in the promotion and marketing of department projects and events, to more effectively address specific concerns of underrepresented students and faculty and allow for more efficient execution of projects, events and initiatives.
  • Act as liaisons between students that identify in diverse groups ranging from, but not limited to: race, culture, LGBTQIA+, internationalism, socioeconomic status, disabilities and religion, as appointed by the Director.
  • Be responsible for highlighting and addressing issues to their specific breaches and plan their own events catering to their designated groups of people.
  • Attend scheduled Department of IDEA meetings unless the presiding officer grants an excused absence before the meeting convening.
  • Mentor and educate IDEA, Intern(s) that the Officers may be assigned to.
