About The Position

The ASUN Legal Services Assistant Director reports to the Director of Legal Services and is the part-time student employee assigned to assist with the programs offered by the ASUN Legal Services. ASUN Legal Services provides students with free access to legal assistance on most civil and criminal matters. Typical legal concerns brought to the program are: Landlord-tenant disputes, Alcohol/other drug arrests (DUl's), Domestic Disputes, Traffic Violations, and Insurance Questions. The service provided by the office includes: access to information and attorney referrals, in addition to consultation opportunities with the staff attorney. Our student employees DO NOT provide legal advice.

Requirements

  • Candidates must be students of the University of Nevada, Reno
  • All applicants must be currently enrolled undergraduate students on track to earn 15 credits for the academic year(s) for which they are employed and maintain a 2.0 GPA
  • Applicants should be mature, self-motivated, understand the importance of discernment and privacy of the client’s situation, and require little supervision
  • You must work within specific ASUN and University policy and procedure, and the Regents code
  • Must be able to work as necessary to meet client needs
  • Must maintain confidentiality of information shared

Responsibilities

  • Providing timely intake interviews for student seeking assistance
  • Determining whether a meeting with the staff attorney would be of assistance
  • Determining whether a referral to a campus administrator/faculty would be of greatest assistance to the student
  • Deciding if an immediate referral to an attorney provided on the ASUN attorney referral list would be of the greatest assistance
  • Attending the staff attorney appointments as the "host" for the program in the absence of the ASUN Director of Legal Services
  • Assist the Director of ASUN Legal Services with the assessment of the effectiveness of the program and satisfaction of the clientele
  • Assist the Director of ASUN Legal Services with the development of educational programs for the campus student community on legal services, as needed
  • Assist the Director of ASUN Legal Services with the marketing of the program to the student body with the assistance of Inkblot Promotions
