About The Position

The Associated Students of the University of Nevada (ASUN) is made up of every undergraduate student at the University of Nevada. ASUN provides a means for students to voice concerns and address issues at the university, local, state, national, and international levels. Responsibilities The duties of the Director of Sustainability are as follows:

Requirements

  • Candidate must be a student at the University of Nevada, Reno
  • Maintain a 2.00 GPA and be enrolled in at least 7 credits
  • Perform all duties and instructions outlined by the ASUN Governing Documents
  • Uphold the Nevada Student Code of Conduct
  • Meet all deadlines set forth
  • Attend all required meetings and training
  • Work scheduled hours
  • Properly complete and submit HR paperwork on time
  • Assist in the promotion of the mission of ASUN and Nevada
  • Behave in an ethical manner, maintaining a high level of integrity
  • Other duties as called upon by my position

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in fields related to environmental science, ecology, public policy, sustainability, agriculture, or related natural sciences fields through course of study, previous work experience, or extracurricular activities
  • Previous management, mentorship, or leadership experience with peers
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement sustainability initiatives or programs, including planning, promotion, and evaluation
  • Knowledge of sustainable practices in areas such as energy efficiency, waste reduction, water conservation, transportation, and food systems.
  • Ability to inspire and motivate others to take action on sustainability issues, including organizing campaigns, events, and educational initiatives
  • Understanding of social justice and equity considerations within sustainability efforts, with a commitment to addressing environmental inequalities and promoting inclusivity
  • Motivation to further the goals and initiatives of ASUN: Advancing sustainability initiatives on campus and in the Reno-Tahoe community by actively promoting enhanced and meaningful recycling and sustainable infrastructure Advocating for a greener Reno-Tahoe by taking the lead in organizing volunteering efforts with environmental- and recreation-based clubs and organizations Working with existing entities to raise student awareness of ongoing sustainability efforts on campus and in the community
  • Excellent organization and project management skills in a team-based environment with multiple projects
  • Flexibility and adaptability within role; ability to time manage and prioritize tasks
  • Willingness to mentor an intern during the fall and spring semesters

Responsibilities

  • Develop relationships with and meet regularly with leaders from environmental and sustainability related student organizations
  • Develop a working relationship with the Assistant Director of Environmental Programs, and other related environmental and sustainability offices, or offices which would benefit from sustainability advocacy.
  • Proactively address environmental and sustainability concerns and policy issues in areas of Campus Life including, but not limited to, transportation, food and dining, facilities, recycling and waste, or any area the Director identifies as a current priority.
  • Serve on university committees and task forces relating to sustainability, such as the University Sustainability Committee, Arboretum Board, and Campus Bicycle Committee
  • Oversee and execute the Sustainable Nevada Initiative Fund Program
  • Organize and appoint the appropriate members to the Sustainable Nevada Initiative Fund committee.
  • Act as a standing member of the Sustainable Nevada Initiative Fund committee.
  • Execute any initiatives assigned by the President relevant to the mission of the Director of Sustainability.
  • Pursue various means of improving the campus transportation system that prioritizes walking, biking, public transportation, and shared commuting.
  • Work on community projects involving the university and off-campus partners.
  • Act as a Consultant and sustainability advocate to the Senate of the Associated Students and other offices by conveying information and data related to sustainability issues concerning university students and new initiatives, and department information.
  • Have a report read or spoken into the record at minimum every other Senate meeting.
  • Attend Senate Committee Meetings should they deal with the themes of Sustainability and give a written or in-person report about those topics to the Committee Chair.
  • Develop a departmental strategic plan for the session to be presented to the president in order ensure equal distribution of tasks and infrastructure for the department’s mission
  • The Director shall recommend to the Senate of the Associated Students appointments of students to the Department.
  • To present a new appointment to the Senate of the Associated Students within the following two weeks of said committee or Senate meeting if an executive appointment is reported unfavorably by the Senate Committee on Oversight or if an appointee is not passed by the Senate, or in the event that the President is unable to find a qualified candidate within those two weeks, the President must present to the Committee on Oversight and explain the circumstances.
  • To chair and oversee all meetings of the Department of Sustainability.
  • Maintain a document to record potential future projects and director notes to be stored in the NevadaBox.
  • Responsible for attending all ASUN retreats, and training as decided by the President and the Director of Executive Outreach.
