About The Position

The Liberal Arts in Prison Program (LAPP) seeks a responsible and detail-oriented student to serve as a tutor supporting academic programming for incarcerated students at the Iowa Correctional Institution for Women (Mitchellville, IA). This position will support MUSIC-395: Sounds of Collective Motion, taught by Professor Putu Hiranmayena. The Student Tutor supports instructional aspects of the program, working closely with students, faculty, and staff to help ensure the academic support of the course.

Requirements

  • Strong academic background; coursework in music preferred.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • High level of attention to detail and adaptability in a range of work environments
  • Ability to maintain clear and professional boundaries in a correctional setting
  • Willingness to travel regularly from campus to Mitchellville (45 minutes from campus).
  • Availability to work required hours on Friday afternoons and attend at least one class per week (on campus).
  • Valid driver’s license required to drive to the prison; use of a campus vehicle is preferred, with mileage reimbursement available for personal vehicle use
  • Be a rising sophomore, junior, or senior.
  • F-1 visa holders are not eligible for this position.

Responsibilities

  • Provide tutoring support and assist in gathering research materials for incarcerated college students
  • Coordinate communication among incarcerated students, faculty, and program staff
