About The Position

This is an undergraduate mentorship position (BUMP) for a Student Technician. The role involves assisting graduate students with research projects in the field and/or lab, with a focus on Big Game, Conservation Biology, Game Birds, and Habitat. Tasks will vary depending on the specific project but may include deploying and monitoring field equipment, handling captured wildlife, conducting habitat management activities, performing wildlife, vegetative, soil, and hydrological surveys, working in the department greenhouse, and collecting, compiling, organizing, and analyzing various collections, photos, and data. The position also requires tracking and reporting worked time monthly, and taking care of equipment and vehicles. The work will be conducted according to the 2026-27 SRSU Academic Calendar (September 1 - May 31) on the SRSU campus and at field-research locations. Field-research locations may present remote and harsh environmental conditions, including potentially dangerous situations.

Requirements

  • Must be an undergraduate student.
  • Classification based on credit hours: Freshman (<30 credit hours), Sophomore (30-59 credit hours), Junior (60-89 credit hours), Senior (>=90 credit hours).
  • Ability to work according to the 2026-27 SRSU Academic Calendar (Sept. 1 - May 31).
  • Willingness to work on the SRSU campus and at field-research locations.
  • Ability to work in remote and harsh environmental conditions, including potentially dangerous situations involving plants, wildlife, surveys, and thermoregulation.

Responsibilities

  • Assist graduate students with research projects in the field and/or lab
  • Deploy/monitor field equipment (i.e., nets, traps, fence, meters, cameras, recording devices, arrays, etc…) associated with research.
  • Handle captured wildlife.
  • Conduct habitat management activities related to research.
  • Conduct various wildlife, vegetative, soil, and hydrological surveys.
  • Work in the Department greenhouse.
  • Collect, compile, organize, inventory, and/or analyze various collections, photos, and data.
  • Keep track of your time worked and report it monthly.
  • Take care of equipment and vehicles as you use them.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.

Benefits

  • Pay rate dependent on classification: $12/hour (Freshman), $13/hour (Sophomore), $14/hour (Junior), $15/hour (Senior).
