About The Position

Reporting to the Manager, Career & Curriculum Development, the Student Talent Development Specialist acts as an early talent development professional to coach students with their career interest and path, train co-op students with the fundamentals of career development and job search techniques that will achieve co-op employment targets and goals. Working Collaboratively with the entire Co-op, Career and Experiential Education (CCEE) team, the Student Talent Development Specialist follows the consistent process and proactive services delivery in all areas of co-op student interaction which contributes to greater retention of students in all programs, increased students’ satisfaction of their co-op experience and office service.

Requirements

  • An undergraduate degree in a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in recruitment and career coaching activities.
  • Knowledge of career development methods and practices.
  • Knowledge of industry trends and labour market demand for all programs.
  • Extensive knowledge of advanced standards for resume preparation.
  • Advanced knowledge of current interviewing trends within numerous diverse industries.
  • Ability to demonstrate a professional and dynamic presentation style to engage and motivate students in small and large groups.
  • Ability to coach, mentor, persuade, and motivate individuals.
  • Ability to work with diverse groups, advising, coaching, and strategizing career planning objectives.
  • Strong customer service orientation with the ability to connect with and engage students, staff, and faculty.
  • Proven ability to organize and handle a variety of projects, deadlines, and schedules simultaneously and independently.
  • Creativity and problem-solving abilities to provide advice and recommendations to students with all aspects of the Career Development process.
  • Ability to think critically to leverage existing resources to solve problems.

Responsibilities

  • Coach students and recent graduates with identifying career options through critical reflection to build confidence, self-awareness, and strategies to navigate career barriers and effectively articulate their strengths to potential employers or academic programs.
  • Support students and recent graduates to translate their experiences into professional skills and confidently communicate those skills in job searches or advanced education applications, through individual appointments, small group and workshop formats.
  • Apply current labour market, career development, recruitment/selection trends, student employment and workplace issues and utilize up-to-date market information to coach students and recent graduates.
  • Ensure effective and seamless transitions within CCEE regarding students’ progress of their talent development as they move through their career/co-op journey and support continuity across career development services.
  • Report on student satisfaction and provide feedback on opportunities to enhance students’ satisfaction and service delivery.
  • Collaborate with the CCEE Talent Development team to research and create resources that address student career development needs.
  • Work with various members of the Career Education Team, including the student team, to engage, support, and promote participation in Career Education activities and events.
  • Adopt coaching and reflection practice approaches to help students develop high quality job search documents within set timelines and effective interview techniques that are essential for successful career transitions.
  • Keep team members apprised of progress, issues, and concerns regarding students’ progress and career readiness, when appropriate.
  • Collaborate with Faculty/Departments to engage students with career development.
  • Maintain the student information database for tracking student engagement, outcomes, and career development activity.
  • Use resume review software (i.e. Vmock) effectively to meet the quality and quantity of document reviews every term.
  • Participate, represent, and support work related activities that may require attendance outside of normal working hours; including but not limited to: Ontario Universities Fair – Toronto; Spring Open House – on campus; Fall Open House – on campus; Co-op Professional Preparation Course (undergraduate and graduate) (when applicable); Faculty Events.
