About The Position

The specialist, in collaboration with the school staff, will develop and implement a plan to utilize school/community resources to further the District mission. This will be done by accessing community and individual assets, meeting critical social/emotional needs, and enhancing student academic performance, while supporting the needs of the classroom teacher. May require working before or after school hours when necessary.

Requirements

Demonstrated ability and aptitude to perform the responsibilities listed.
GED or high school diploma; some college preferred.
Demonstrated ability and proficiency to speak, write, comprehend, and translate both English and identified language.
Demonstrate cultural competence in both US culture and cultures of the identified student subset.
Demonstrated ability to interact positively and in a professional manner with a diverse group of students, parents, staff, and community members in a confidential manner.
Ability to relate positively to youth and adults of varying socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic backgrounds, learning styles, and special needs.
Demonstrated knowledge of culturally responsive programs and activities.
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and clearly in both written and oral form.
Experience with computers and software such as Windows, Microsoft Office, and/or publishing software.
Professionalism, confidentiality, flexibility/adaptability, empathy, tact and diplomacy, calm/composed under pressure, initiative, collaborative.

Responsibilities

Request data from the attendance office to identify students, with patterns of absenteeism or tardiness.
Identify, connect, and build relationships of trust with the student and family community.
Attend and participate in community events for students and families.
Connect with District staff to identify strategies to reduce tardiness and improve academic performance for identified students.
Intervene with strategies to reduce tardiness and improve academic performance for identified students.
Work with teachers to understand the student's needs.
Coordinate with counselor and other school specialists to find appropriate services to meet the identified needs.
Connect students and families to District staff, to coordinate resources provided to the school site and community; including primary health, mental health, arts, recreation, afterschool, and other resources.
Connect parents to resource for developing skill for supporting the social/academic needs of students.
Develop positive relationships with families, District staff, and community organizations with the focus on providing academic and social supports for students.
Attend and network with families during parent connection efforts, such as Open House, student led conferences, parent workshops, and community events.
Gain knowledge of the College Bound Scholarship program and support students through the enrollment process.
Gather information about the impact of interventions.
Make adjustments to interventions when necessary.
Willingness to work before or after school hours, when necessary.
