About The Position

Under the direction of an assigned Principal, or designee, assist in the supervision of students in all areas of the school campus, including the cafeteria, multipurpose room, playgrounds, parking lots, bus unloading/loading zones and areas adjacent to the school, to provide for the safety and well-being of students. Incumbents do not report to a classroom teacher and do not provide academic supportive functions, but are instead primarily responsible for supervising students' behavior and ensuring students' safety.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or its equivalency and six months of experience in supervising or working with school age students in an organized setting is desirable.
  • Policies, procedures, guidelines and rules concerning school safety, including safe playground practices, appropriate student behavior and discipline standards.
  • Typical games and activities appropriate for school-age children.
  • Oral and written communication skills.
  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
  • Conflict resolution strategies and techniques.
  • Principles of customer service.
  • Monitor, observe and report student behavior according to approved policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrate an understanding, patient and receptive attitude toward students of varied age groups.
  • Give clear and courteous directions to students.
  • Analyze and take appropriate action regarding routine and/or emergency situations as necessary.
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with a wide variety of personalities.
  • Establish and maintain positive and cooperative working relationships with district staff, students, parents and the public.
  • Apply interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy.
  • Maintain confidential student and family information.
  • Observe health and safety regulations.
  • Understand and follow oral and written directions.
  • Plan, prioritize and organize work to meet assigned deadlines.
  • Read, interpret and apply instructions, rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Operate two-way radio equipment.
  • Speak, read and write English in a manner sufficient to complete required duties.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and monitor students at assigned times, in assigned areas, to assure their well-being and safety.
  • Direct students and enforce school rules and conduct standards with a professional tone and consistent manner.
  • Proactively intercede in potential problem situations between students.
  • Use positive and effective behavior strategies to model and promote good student behavior.
  • Help guide students in developing good habits of sportsmanship and citizenship.
  • Perform minor housekeeping tasks to assist in maintaining a neat, clean, orderly and safe atmosphere for students.
  • Assess student injuries and secure assistance.
  • Report student injuries to supervisor; complete accident reports, as required.
  • Scan for wandering students and unidentified visitors, checking for valid passes, as necessary.
  • Report unauthorized activities and unauthorized persons on school grounds to supervisor.
  • Monitor and report any potential safety concerns to supervisor and write basic follow-up communication, as needed.
  • Alert staff or administrators in emergency situations, as appropriate.
  • Operate two-way radio equipment for emergency assistance, as necessary.
  • Attend scheduled in-service meetings, as required.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
