About The Position

The Family Resource Center – Student Social Worker (Unpaid Internship) provides graduate students (MSW preferred) with supervised, hands-on experience in client engagement and program support at the Family Resource Center. Practicum students will conduct client intakes and needs assessments, make referrals to agency resources, and co-facilitate parent support groups, including lesson planning and documentation. They will also have the opportunity to shadow client cases and engage in community advocacy efforts. This practicum offers students the opportunity to develop on-the-ground practice for their future as social workers, leadership experience, and knowledge of nonprofit program operations, while contributing meaningfully to a mission-driven organization.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a master’s degree in Social Work, Psychology, Sociology, Human Services, Public Health, Education, or a related field (MSW students preferred).
  • At least one year of relevant social services experience.
  • Cultural humility and a strength-based approach to client-centered service.
  • Strong clinical-level communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to conduct intakes, assessments, and referrals independently.
  • Advanced advocacy skills to represent families’ interest and ensure they access appropriate resources.
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English required.
  • Proficient in basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office.
  • Organized, reliable, and able to maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Able to commit to a minimum of 3 months, with 5-8 hours per week.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct client intakes and need assessments
  • Engage with clients at the Community Food Market, assess needs, and make appropriate referrals to relevant agency resources.
  • Support facilitation of parent support groups, including lesson planning and post-session documentation.
  • Participate at Community Food Market: engage with clients to identify those who need additional resources and refer them to relevant agency resources.
  • Participate in outreach events; promote and distribute outreach materials in the community in efforts to connect families to essential services.
  • Support the planning and execution of community events and workshops.
  • Project based opportunities: Compile client demographic data to inform annual reports, Create a client resource manual. Create a lesson and activity for a client group class.
  • Participate with the agency in community advocacy (i.e public comment, budget advocacy, and other related tasks.
  • Shadow 1-3 client cases.
  • Ensure confidentiality of all client information.
