About The Position

The student security analyst will have the unique opportunity to play a critical role in setting up and managing a student-led security lab and security operations center (SOC). This position will allow the student to gain hands-on experience in various cybersecurity domains, from firewall and systems administration to vulnerability management, threat hunting, and SOC operations while contributing to the security of our campus data and systems. The student analyst will learn how to use a variety of security tools that are industry-standard, known, and recognized by security practitioners. Moreover the student worker will acquire a robust set of transferable skills in analytical thinking, communication, project management, and teamwork—skills that would be valuable in many academic or professional pursuits.

Responsibilities

• Administer the campus vulnerability management program, including administering the vulnerability scanner, maintaining scan schedules, and reviewing scan reports.
• Research vulnerabilities, understand their severity, prioritize and track their remediation.
• Maintain a log aggregation and event management system to analyze threat traffic and perform security investigations.
• Develop programs to engage students with cybersecurity information, including designing publications and executing events to raise awareness of cyberthreats that target students.
• Manage a security lab to deploy and test security tools like honeypots and firewalls in a safe and isolated manner.
