About The Position

This is a summer research assistant position focused on behavioral sciences research, specifically studying sleep and circadian rhythms in children and adolescents. The role involves a formal training program covering sleep science, polysomnography techniques, data analysis, and research presentation skills. Apprentices will gain hands-on experience in data collection, reduction, and entry for a major research project assessing circadian rhythms and sleep homeostatic processes. The position requires flexibility in working schedules, including potential overnight and weekend shifts, to accommodate the research protocols.

Requirements

  • Undergraduate students with a strong interest in behavioral sciences research.
  • Demonstrated enthusiasm for, commitment to, and availability for the full program.
  • Ability and willingness to work on schedules that circle the clock, including owl, lark, and neither shifts.
  • Must reside in or near Providence for the summer.
  • Successful applicants are required to apply for student membership in the Sleep Research Society ($45 Fee).

Nice To Haves

  • Previous courses or lab work in sleep or circadian rhythms are helpful but not required.
  • Students from local institutions are asked to maintain participation in sleep lab activities beyond the summer by working on the lab's sleep studies during the school year.
  • Graduate students may be accepted under special circumstances.
  • Students may apply for a repeat summer experience as a Senior Research Apprentice.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct data collection, including electrode application, one-to-one work with research participants, and administration of forms and tests.
  • Perform data reduction and data entry.
  • Participate in a formal training program covering normal human sleep and circadian rhythms, polysomnographic recording techniques, and data analysis.
  • Learn and apply ethical conduct of research principles.
  • Assist with experimental hypotheses, rationale, and methods for the laboratory's summer research project.
  • Develop presentation skills for scientific meetings.
  • Work on research protocols that involve unusual schedules, potentially including overnight and weekend shifts.
