The Student Nurse Intern (SNI) works under the direction and direct supervision of a registered nurse (RN) to protect and promote health, prevent illness and injury, and alleviate suffering through nursing care. In partnership with the RN, the SNI contributes to holistic care and patient and family advocacy, collaborating with patients, families, and other healthcare providers. Practice is guided by the ANA Code of Ethics. SNIs work under a Kaweah Health RN preceptor and may perform basic bedside care and selected nursing procedures only after the relevant skills have been validated by the school of nursing in conjunction with the RN preceptor. A validated Skills Checklist must be available while working. Some duties require an RN to be present even when the SNI's skills have been validated, including medication administration, starting or adjusting intravenous therapy, administering IV medication, and taking physician orders. After completing Kaweah Health position- and unit-specific competencies, the SNI may perform specified ongoing duties, including assisting patients with daily needs, reporting changes or concerns to licensed staff, documenting care, collecting measurements and specimens, and maintaining a safe patient environment. The role also includes providing care appropriate to the population served and its cultural, linguistic, spiritual, gender, and age-specific needs.
