The Student Nurse Extern supports patients with activities of daily living, personal hygiene, feeding, and ambulation. The role takes vital signs and height and weight measurements, observes and reports changes in patient conditions, and helps orient patients and families to the unit and explain safety measures. It also maintains clean, orderly patient rooms; assists with clerical tasks and inventory; and performs duties within the applicable Nurse Aide I or Nurse Aide II scope. With appropriate training, the extern may perform technical tasks such as administering a 12-lead electrocardiogram and routine venipuncture. The role requires physical abilities including walking, standing, sitting, lifting, reaching, bending, stretching, stooping, pushing, and pulling. The extern must be able to lift and support up to 35 pounds while handling patients, medical equipment, and supplies, and must have manual and finger dexterity. Physical abilities testing is required. Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED, be in good standing in a registered nurse academic program, and have successfully completed junior year or its equivalent by the time of the Nurse Extern program. Nurse Aide I and Nurse Aide II registry listing and current Basic Cardiac Life Support certification are required before the start date. Behavioral Health Externs have the same education and program-standing requirements and must have current Basic Cardiac Life Support certification; the posting does not list the Nurse Aide registry requirement for that group.
