The Student Nurse Extern supports patients and residents with activities of daily living and personal hygiene, takes vital signs and measurements, and assists with feeding and ambulation. The extern maintains clean and orderly patient rooms, observes and reports changes in patient conditions, orients patients and families to the unit, and explains safety measures. The role also includes clerical and inventory tasks, duties within the applicable Nurse Aide I or Nurse Aide II scope, and—when appropriately trained—technical tasks such as administering a 12-lead electrocardiogram and routine venipuncture. The position requires a high school diploma or GED, good standing in a Registered Nurse academic program, and successful completion of the junior year or equivalent by the time of the extern program. For the standard extern role, current listing as a Nurse Aide I and Nurse Aide II on the DFS Nurse Aide Registry is required before the start date. Current Basic Cardiac Life Support certification is required. Behavioral Health Externs have the same listed education, program-standing, and BCLS requirements, but the posting does not list the Nurse Aide Registry requirement for that group. The role involves walking, standing, sitting, lifting, reaching, bending, stretching, stooping, pushing, and pulling. The extern must be able to lift and support 35 pounds, speak and understand English, and have manual and finger dexterity. Physical abilities testing is required.
