About The Position

Humber River Health is seeking Student Nurse Externs to join their medicine and surgical programs. Since opening as North America’s first fully digital hospital in 2015, Humber River Health has been dedicated to transforming healthcare through technology and clinical expertise. The Student Nurse Extern role is an unregulated healthcare position providing direct personal support to patients, focusing on basic care needs for up to 10 patients each, under the supervision of Registered Nurses and Registered Practical Nurses. Responsibilities include assisting with activities of daily living, documenting patient care, and reporting clinical concerns to supervisors. The role does not involve performing regulated acts such as medication administration or vital signs assessment.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in years 2-4 of their nursing program of studies
  • Current CPR certification required
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Exceptional customer service skills
  • Must be a team player (works well with others)
  • Ability to accurately and effectively communicate with the inter-professional healthcare team members
  • Demonstrates understanding of the use of technology
  • Ability to provide basic assistive care with frequent supervision and ongoing mentoring from a Registered Nurse or Registered Practical Nurse
  • Mandatory compliance with HRH training- Privacy & Confidentiality requirements, WHMIS, Fire & Safety, hand hygiene modules
  • Excellent customer service skills; strong interpersonal and communication skills, ability to use good judgment in assessing difficult situations
  • Good work attendance

Responsibilities

  • Provision of basic care (activities of daily living such as bathing, toileting, feeding, etc.) needs for up to 10 patients each.
  • Work under the supervision of both Registered Nurses and Registered Practical Nurses in accordance to department policies and procedures.
  • Documentation of activities of daily living (ADLs), such as intake and output, and relevant communication for patients in which they have provided care for.
  • Immediately report any clinical concerns to their direct supervisor.
