About The Position

Humber River Health is seeking Student Nurse Externs to join their medicine and surgical programs. As North America's first fully digital hospital, Humber River Health is dedicated to transforming healthcare through technology and clinical expertise. The organization is affiliated with the University of Toronto and Queen’s University, focusing on clinical excellence, optimizing care through technology, and community connection in its research strategy. Student Nurse Externs will provide direct personal support to patients, assisting with basic care needs for up to 10 patients each, under the supervision of Registered Nurses and Registered Practical Nurses. They will be responsible for documenting activities of daily living and communicating relevant information. The role does not involve performing regulated acts such as medication administration or vital signs. Any clinical concerns must be immediately reported to the supervisor.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in years 2-4 of a nursing program of studies.
  • Current CPR certification required.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Exceptional customer service skills.
  • Must be a team player (works well with others).
  • Ability to accurately and effectively communicate with the inter-professional healthcare team members.
  • Demonstrates understanding of the use of technology.
  • Ability to provide basic assistive care with frequent supervision and ongoing mentoring from a Registered Nurse or Registered Practical Nurse.
  • Mandatory compliance with HRH training- Privacy & Confidentiality requirements, WHMIS, Fire & Safety, hand hygiene modules.
  • Good work attendance.

Responsibilities

  • Provision of basic care (activities of daily living such as bathing, toileting, feeding, etc.) needs for up to 10 patients each.
  • Documentation of activities of daily living (ADLs), such as intake and output, and relevant communication for patients.
  • Immediately report any clinical concerns to their direct supervisor.
